Protecting Yourself From Prosecution or Litigation with Safety Solutions

Make a risk assessment.
You must be able to demonstrate that you have assessed potential risks and taken steps to provide appropriate safety solutions. The HSE investigator would look favourably on you if you can demonstrate that you have calculated the risks and reported the measures you have taken in the event of an accident.

If you do a risk assessment, make a note of it! When you perform potential threat training with an employee, make a note of it and have them sign it. If an accident happens, no matter how minor, make a note of it and take action to prevent it from occurring again.

Finally, make sure you’re wearing protective protection.
It’s useless to post a warning sign that says “wear ear defenders” if the employee doesn’t have them. If wearing safety equipment is required, then make it available. It is the employee’s decision whether or not to use them after they have been given. However, you must first be seen to be delivering safety solutions. As the two items go hand in hand, several sign companies now sell both PPE and safety signs.
