Roofing- A Closer Look

When people think of roofing they usually only think about the roof itself. The roof protects the house from the elements, like rain and sunlight, as well as any damage caused by objects above the ground, such as trees, cars, or other things. However a roofing contractor can help with the rest of your home’s roof, making sure it’s protected and functioning properly year round. You should also learn about other types of roofing so you can understand how everything works together and why you need to have certain roofing systems installed instead of others. If you wish to learn more about this, visit James Kate Construction: Roofing, Painting & Windows, Arlington.

A roofing shingle is the primary exterior layer of your roof. Roofing shingles come in many different types, including asphalt, ceramic tile, and metal shingles. The type you choose depends on what you want to accomplish aesthetically, how weather resistant your roof is, and your budget. Sometimes you’ll even find that a roofing company will install the entire decking materials yourself if you’re a little on the tight side. A typical roofing shingle comes in at least four layers: membrane, tar/felt board, top coating, and protective underlayment. Depending on what structure of shingle you choose, you’ll probably have a layer of tar/felt board, a layer of metal flashing, and the final layer of synthetic or wooden underlayment.

Another common type of roofing is made from ceramic tiles. This is a much more traditional way to build a roof, and it’s an important part of protecting the roof from the elements as well as providing insulation against heat loss. It doesn’t matter what type of roofing you choose as long as it includes a layer of tar and or felt board. Other roofing systems include organic or composite materials, such as rubber roofing, metal roofing, composite shingles, and wood shingles.
