Local Area Network – An Overview

In the past 20 years, new computer technology has invaded the global industry. It has had such an effect on the way we do business, with an ever increasing need for change, that it is a necessity rather than a privilege. LAN is a computer network that interconnects computers, such as a school, laboratory, residential complex or office building, within a limited area. In practise, LAN is compared to a Wide Area Network, which covers a greater geographical distance and can include leased telecommunications circuits, whereas LAN media is handled locally. If you have LAN connections to the internet at home or at your office, you might have often come across references to these networks.

A common use of LAN is to provide internet access simultaneously to all users in a house with a single internet link. All internet-capable devices available at home can be configured as nodes in a LAN and can be connected to the internet via specified computers for this purpose. In order to provide access to shared resources such as printers, it can also be used to connect workstations in an office environment in a similar way. To link computers inside a network, it uses 10 base T twisted pair cables or wireless networking. Before, LAN connections used to be very simple, but now they are distinct structures.

With at least five transmission computing standards and two information standards necessary to control the network, these ties have become so complex that they require their own operating systems. LAN features are scarce, as follows: Interconnected devices: To link them to local area networks distributed across an enterprise, bridges and routers are used.

For example, to transfer information between Ethernet, token ring and fibre distributed data interface networks, a router may be used. Backbone Networks: These are also integrated local area networks, but offer high-speed data transfer and control between the different networks for data flow.

High-speed LAN laptop: This links desktop computers directly to the network of fiber-distributed data interfaces and has access to the maximum transmission speed of 100MHz.

Ethernet and International Business Machines’ token ring network are the two most popular local area networks.

Base band coaxial cable or shielded pair wire is used for Ethernet networks and can run at 10MHz. —
