There are a few basic requirements for becoming an appliance repair technician. Most companies require that the applicant has a high school diploma or equivalent and some companies may even require that the applicant have an associate’s degree. To be eligible for an apprenticeship, one year training is usually required. After completing the basic requirements for all prospective Appliance Repair Technicians must pass the Certified Appliance Recertification (CAE) examination. In addition, most companies will require that applicants pass a one-hour technical interview.
After training, appliance repair technicians must pass the certification exam given by The US Department of Education. Applicants to the CAE exam must first complete the Basic Appliance Repair Training Course which covers electrical systems and appliances; installation and maintenance, including component placement; troubleshooting techniques and repairs to electrical equipment. After passing the CAE exam, one will be awarded a certificate indicating that the person has passed the test. Appliance repair training courses vary from state to state and some of the training programs offer online study guides. If you choose to take an online training course for appliance repair, make sure that the program is accredited by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
